Soup's On!

How to Volunteer for Soup Lunches

By Donna Kalka

Our very first soup of the season will be served Saturday, April 7 from our fabulously clean kitchen at noon.

There are three volunteer tasks required to make Soup Lunches a success

Task 1: Open up the kitchen for lunch and turn on the propane hotplate. Heat up the soup and ring the lunch bell at noon. At 1 pm wipe down kitchen surfaces and close the kitchen. If you don't know how to do this, ask one of your Hospitality Team members or your Block Leader to show you.

Task 2: Bring a stock pot of homemade soup (you need to cook it at home first). A stock pot can hold up to 12 quarts of soup and 6 quarts is plenty. When it is cold and rainy, we typically need one volunteer to make soup. When the weather gets warmer, we tend to go through more soup and will need two volunteers to make it.
Task 3: Take home dirty dishes and utensils to wash and bring back to the kitchen and store in their marked plastic storage containers beneath the kitchen counter.

Note: You do not need to do all three tasks.

From April 7th to May 12th Soup Lunches are coordinated by Pappy's Bench.

The best way to communicate your interest in volunteering for a task is to do one of the following...

1) Contact the Pappy's Bench Hospitality Area Leader
Mollie Wirtz molliewirtz@gmail.com or call 206-200-3241 and leave a message.

2) Contact a Pappy's Bench Block Leader
Ray Schutte rayschutte@comcast.net or 206-499-3649 and leave a message.
David Branch davidbranch@comcast.net or 206-282-6400 and leave a message.

3) Enter your name on the Soup sign-up sheet in the tool shed next to the white board and sign up for your preferred date(s).

4) Tell someone from Leadership Team in person. (Check your handbook for photo identification).

Make sure to enter your volunteer hours in the red binder in the tool shed. Block Leader assignments will change May 19.

-- Bon Appétit and happy gardening.

Email Bounces and Spam Filters
By Terry Hunt

Let me preface this by saying I have updated the email address to interbayppatchgarden@gmail.com in order to long term streamline this entire process.   By using only interbayppatchgarden@gmail.com for newsletter submissions, it ensures your email gets into the proper inbox for timely processing.  My goal is to have the email, the newsletter and the blog information remain the same no matter who is handling the responsibly.  This can easily and seamlessly be handed to over from one person to another without you having to change anything in your process.

Now, I know that a few of you have had some issues with emails being bounced back to you as undeliverable.  Let me take a moment to advise you how to handle this.  With the unfortunate abundance of spam emails, the email companies have filters in place that will block many emails from being delivered.  Is is simply out of our control.  But there are ways to handle your emails to reduce or eliminate this from happening.

If you get something returned to you, first just try sending it again.  Do this by copying the content from the original email,  starting a brand new email, pasting the information in it, double check your typing of the email address and sending it again.  Forwarding the bounced email could trigger the spam filter again.  If it is a newsletter submission, request, or comment, please only use one email address (interbayppatchgarden@gmail.com).  Adding multiple emails addresses may trigger a filter to bounce it back.

If that still doesn't work, and you get something bounced back, try replying to an old newsletter or email you received from interbayppgarden@gmail.com.  The email pathway to you was already established when it was delivered the first time so a reply should be built in.

I hope that helps clear up any confusion around how emails can work.  Please let me know if have any questions or concerns.

Cheers~
