Blues For Food Has A New Website
By Deb Rock

I'm pleased to announce our new website went live May 1st. It was completed 100% by the volunteer work force of Maggie Chen, Jude Berman, Marla Masters, and myself, Deb Rock.

http://bluesforfoodfest.org/

Our new website has a lot of new links to support the giving garden and food bank garden programs that P-Patch supports. We hope to be a resource to those in our community that are seeking meaningful volunteer positions with our gardens.

Thank you, Deb Rock

Garden Weasel
By Merrili Owens

Hi folks, there is a weasel in the garden and she is catching rats.  A few people have spotted her so far.  I saw her with a large rat in her mouth heading to the south bank.  Since she is hunting in broad daylight and it is spring, I suspect she has kits in a den somewhere.  Please respect this beautiful and wild creature.  Let her be.   Pick up any rat bait and traps you have set out.  She could easily get caught in a trap or bring a poisoned rat to her nest which would poison them all.  She and her family will reward the p-patch by taking care of our rat and mole problems.

Second Saturday Dahlia Tuber Stock Market Report
By Donna Kalka

Volunteers Mollie Wirtz, Denise Read, Donna Kalka, Mary Machala and Susan Harris brought in $354 last Saturday at the garden. Donna will continue selling tubers until the weather improves or Hospitality Co-Leads asks her to move them out of the kitchen. Email orders are being taken at this time.

Contact donna.kalka@gmail.com if you are interested in purchasing dahlia tubers for yourself or others. Three tubers for $5 is a real deal.

Please Start Tracking Garden Theft
By Donna Kalka

It's that time of year... fences and plants are growning legs and leaving the garden. Please let Leadership Team Coordinator Donna Kalka donna.kalka@gmail.com know if you are interested in managing the theft tracking log so we can send updates to the local police. Thanks.

Raised Beds For Sale
By Eric Jonas

Greetings,

My name is Eric with a local urban farming supply company called Seattle Farm Supply. I am writing to let you know about my raised beds I'm offering that the p-patch gardeners might be interested in. I'm offering discounts to p-patch since I'm able to kill a few birds with one stone by delivering multiple beds to the same location. I also provide soil to fill them if they are interested that.

Here is the link for the beds on my website. Discounts can range from 10-20% depending on volume ordered.

Get Your Glean On: Produce Deliveries Begin in June
By Amanda Lee

Starting the first week of June, Interbay volunteers will deliver gleaned produce to local shelters every Monday morning and Saturday afternoon. The women at Mary's Place and men at St. Martin's on Westlake, both located in Beltown, are especially excited to start receiving fresh vegetables! Please consider putting extra produce from your plot in the shed the day before or morning of for volunteers to pick up. We are also recruiting new drivers, so if you would like to volunteer to deliver Interbay-grown produce on Monday mornings (8:30am - 10am) from June - October, please contact us at lettucelink@solid-ground.org. Let us know some dates that work for you, and we'll put you on the schedule! We are especially looking for June volunteers right now.

Thanks!

Grape Vine Pruning Work Party Postponed
By Jennifer Carlson

Due to scheduling conflicts, we will not be gathering to prune the plaza grape vines this coming Saturday, May 12th.

If you see Jennifer Carlson in the plaza surrounded by a pile of grape vine prunings, feel free to join her while she prunes and then wraps the vines around recycled tomato cage rings.  Those will be the forms for our lavender wreaths that you will learn to make in July!

Stay tuned...

Grass Clippings & Chipper Chopper
By Susan Casey

Help move the bad, decomposing grass

We are deluged with too much fresh grass  clippings which is rotting plus we have some illegal dumpers who have 'blessed' us with some awful stuff.  Approved landscapers are Rainbow of Magnolia, Gracious Gardens, and Golden Gardens Landscapers.

If each of you, every time you come to the garden, would  fill a wheelbarrow of the stuff and spread it around the berm in front. Toss it on either side of the path, not too deep and be sure to not have it touching the fruit trees.  Many many thanks.

Please report any dumping this week to...

Compost lead Susan Casey (scompost@q.com),
Leadership team coordinator Donna Kalka (donna.kalka@gmail.com), or
Block leader Ray Schutte (rayschutte@comcast.net).

Try to note down the truck type, license number, time and date.

How to use fresh grass clippings

Fresh grass clippings are bonus for your soil.  A layer of fresh grass clippings on a growing garden
·                    inhibits evaporation of soil moisture
·                    discourages weeds because sunlight is blocked
·                    provides a great source of nitrogen.

You can sprinkle an inch of fresh grass clippings between rows and around plants.  Repeat weekly.

 Chipper chopper

I'll be running the chipper chopper this Saturday, May 12 probably from 11 am til around 2 pm.  Chopping your weeds and excess vegetation is another great way to easily return nutrients to you garden.  And much easier than chopping by hand!
